Description
The Department of Paediatrics of Mymensingh Medical College is one of the oldest and prestigious department. It became functioning from 1968, which is six years after the establishment of the medical college. The department launched its journey with Dr. M A Qavi, Associate professor as 1st Head of Department of Paediatrics.
Department started with only 4 beds in 3rd floor of old building. Now it is situated in 5th floor of new building of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. It comprises of three units (ward no 30 and 31) with 100 allocated beds. But it bears the load of 800-900 sick children daily from it’s own and surroundings 6-7 districts. It’s another wings neonatology, considered as the largest NICU and SCANU of Bangladesh is situated in 1st floor of old building, comprises of two units (ward no 25). It also serving daily 200-250 neonates. So, undoubtly to say the department is working with a high burden since its establishment. Here paediatrics patient can get admission round the clock. It has also a busy outpatient department, located in 1st floor of new building, including Follow up Clinic, Lactation Management Center (LMC), EPI Center, Shishu Bikash Kendra. Everyday about 500 children get treatment from here.
Education
The department is running undergraduate and many post graduate courses. It is rendering its academic programme to students of MBBS of 3rd ,4th and 5th year from the very beginning. Every year 250 MBBS students are admitted in this medical college.
In 2001, the department has started its postgraduate course with Diploma in Child Health (DCH) and till to date about 68 medical graduates have successfully achieved DCH degree under the University of Dhaka and BSMMU.
In 2002, Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Paediatrics non-residency program has been started and by July, 2013 session, 28 doctors have obtained their MD degree in Paediatrics under the University of Dhaka and BSMMU. In 2014, Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Paediatrics residency programme has been started and by January, 2024 session, 15 doctors have obtained their MD degree in pediatrics under the BSMMU.
Currently, there are 06 postgraduate students enrolled in DCH course and 33 post graduate students enrolled in MD residency course. Paediatrics is also being taught as a compulsory subject in different discipline of all other MD/MS courses of this Institute. Our department is also performing many research activities, which are guided by our senior faculty.
