Department of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery: Department of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery is running from the very beginning of this institute. From the time of establishment in 1962 till today the department is serving the people of this locality. It provides clinical as well as academic facilities. Department is providing outdoor and indoor facilities. About 200 patients are getting outdoor service everyday (except Friday); 1 resident surgeon and two medical officers are giving this service. There are 32 beds in indoor (male bed-24, female bed-8) which are divided into 2 units headed by one professor and one associate professor. Department is performing 3 routine OT/week; average 15 routine cases and 10 emergency cases are done every week. All kinds of otolaryngological operations are performing, among them some advanced surgeries are notable like- total laryngectomy with TEP, Neck dissection (MRND, Selective neck dissection), Endoscopic sinus surgery, Tympanoplasty etc. Academic service includes teaching of MBBS students in 4th and 5th year, DLO course under BSMMU (previously the course was under DU). After introduction of this course total 6 students successfully completed. Some research work had been completed and some are running at present which are mentioned below. Education- Course & training: MBBS and DLO courses are running; full 4 year training for FCPS of BCPS and training for other courses of BSMMU is recognized. MBBS: Lecture-100 (in 5th year only), two lecture/week Schedule time: Saturday and Tuesday from 12.10 PM to 1.00 PM. Clinical class: 67. Schedule time: 9.00AM to 11.00 AM.( Friday is holyday) Students are placed in ENT ward for 30 days in 4th, 30 days in 5th year and 7 days block posting before final professional examination. In every placement includes clinical class, items, card final and before professional examination final assessment examination. MD: DLO- Lecture-100 Clinical class-120.
Outdoor Facilities: Time schedule: 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM on everyday except Friday. Staff: 2 medical officers and 1 resident surgeon are giving specialized treatment service everyday. Facilities: Treatment of all ENT and head-neck diseases. Arrange admission who required it. Some minor surgeries are also done in outdoor OT on Tuesday. Indoor: Time schedule: Indoor is open 24 hours. Personnel: All doctors are divided into two units
Beds: Total- 32; Male24 (20 non-paying and 4 paying bed) and Female 8(5 non-paying and 3 paying bed) OT Facilities: 3 days are reserved for routine OT ( from 8:00AM to 2:30 PM on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday). OT facility for emergency operation is available at any time. 2 OT tables are available, among them 1 for operation under G/A and another for operation under L/A. Advanced instruments: 1 operating microscope, Hopkin’s Rod( 00, 300, 700)(Karl Storz), Fibreoptic light source with laryngoscope and head light, FOL machines are available. Routine Opertions: Ear: Myringotomy, Tympanoplasty, Mastoidectomy(all types), Facial nerve decompression, Nose: ESS, Maxillectomy(Different types), Septoplasty, Reduction of turbinate, Throat: Tonsillectomy, Adenoidectomy Neck: Laryngectomy, neck dissection, excision of benign and congenital neck mass.
Completed: Congenital neck swelling in children-Study of 36 cases Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury in thyroid surgery-1 year study in MMCH. Evaluation of hearing before and after tympanoplasty-study of 100 cases. Ongoing: Outcomes of total laryngectomy with TEP operation-study of 30 cases. Complication of ESS- Complications of thyroidectomy operation Clinical evaluation of CSOM with intracranial complication.
